CHAPTER 18 LEARNING TO SEE

As I lay awake, stretched out in Erika’s serene bedroom, atop her gray velvet platform bed, I tried to make sense of my day. It had started checking my emails and voicemail messages for the nonexistent queries from headhunters or banks. It had veered into the bizarre, as I babysat and fondled a bondage freak. The pile of cash from the various scenes had gotten pretty tall. It had only been a week of living in Erika’s place and helping Erika’s clients, but I had already earned over $10,000.

My ego balked at doing sex work piecework when it wanted to be collecting a salary plus bonus, but my bank account was delighted to be fed. If I were somehow able to sustain this pace, a safety deposit box or a strategy for handling the money would be necessary soon. Large cash transactions send up flares in retail banks. Cash is preferred by terrorists and traffickers, and I was neither. But a conversation with the IRS because someone had filed a Suspicious Activity Report on me would be a disaster. That kind of blemish could harm my real career, which was another compelling reason this kinky adventure was insane. It wasn’t just the risk of arrest or accident, there was enormous risk just doing something prosaic, like depositing money.

I got in the habit of calling Erika every other day, to debrief on any sessions I’d undertaken or to prepare for any imminent encounters. Her quest for the butterfly painting was going slowly, but her benefactor remained enchanted by her company, so she remained committed to staying in Switzerland.

I asked her about Dan. “I saw Levine, the bondage freak, what’s his story? How’d he find you?”

“He was a referral, so I don’t know much about him. He’s just a great client. He shows up, pays well. You know what he wants, and he’s happy with what he gets.”

“Yeah, that was my experience, too. But why the cuffs in the dark? Don’t most men want to be able to see themselves, or at least be seen?”

“Yes, that’s why I have mirrors all over the place. So they can see me work, and so they can see themselves squirm. I don’t know why Levine likes the dark. Did you ask him?”

“Not really. It seemed personal.”

“Every fetish is personal. I guess I’m just not that interested in where it originates. Everybody has a story or a theory, but it’s rarely actionable. It’s enough to know what the guy’s button is, and then you just have to push it.”

“You make it sound so simple.”

“It is. Find the button. Often, they’ll tell you what that button is about—and then push it. And once you’ve pushed it gently, you hammer it. You just need to pay attention.”

“Right—look for the signals.”

“Precisely. Their mouths may be incapable of saying what they want, but their bodies scream it. So pay attention.”

Erika’s words became my mantra. “Pay attention.” Instead of just taking people literally, I started really looking at them.
